Fright Night

Fright Night

Fright Night (1985) is a horror-comedy directed by Tom Holland. The story follows teenager Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale), who suspects his charming new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon), is a vampire. With no one believing him, including his skeptical girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse of Married with Children fame) and best friend “Evil” Ed (Stephen Geoffreys), Charley seeks help from a washed-up horror TV host, Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall). As the danger escalates, Amy and Evil become entangled in the battle against Jerry, with terrifying consequences.

In the pantheon of 1980s horror films, Fright Night ranks lower on my list. While the concept is strong, the execution falls short for me. There are some fun moments, but overall, it leans too heavily into kitsch, and the acting is mostly mediocre.  Notable exceptions are the enjoyable performance of Chris Sarandon, and a fun scene shot in a 1980s nightclub showcasing some awesome New Wave music, outfits, and hairstyles.

Most of the movie was shot at Laird International Studios (now Culver Studios), with one notable scene filmed on the streets of Culver City with the exterior of Evil Ed’s home at 9520 Farragut Dr.

Charley hops out of his Mustang on Farragut Drive.  The house and trees at 4200 Irving Place can be seen in the background.  The homes and trees are remarkably unchanged today.

Charlie runs north on Farragut Dr with the roof of 4200 Irving Pl in the background.
