Tron (1982) is a groundbreaking sci-fi adventure that transports viewers into the digital world, where computer programmer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) gets pulled into a virtual universe ruled by a malevolent AI. To escape, Flynn teams up with a heroic security program named Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and battles through neon-lit arenas in a quest to outsmart the system. The film’s innovative special effects and futuristic visuals were revolutionary for its time, setting a new standard for CGI in cinema.
Flynn’s Arcade, the iconic location where Tron’s adventure kicks off, was filmed at the Hull Building in Culver City at 9543 Culver Blvd. Today, this spot is home to one of my favorite restaurants in Culver City, Akasha. Both the exterior and interior shots were filmed here.
It remains a nostalgic landmark for fans of the film. The location beautifully blends Tron’s digital fantasy with Culver City’s rich local history, making it a must-visit for movie enthusiasts.
In the scene at Flynn’s Arcade, Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) and Lora Baines (Cindy Morgan) enter the lively arcade, scanning the room for their friend Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). They spot him in his element, completely at ease in the glowing world of arcade machines, effortlessly dominating a game with his signature skill.
Flynn greets them with his playful charisma, and after some quick banter, they decide to head upstairs to Flynn’s private office. As they make their way up, the energy shifts from the noisy arcade floor to the more secluded, makeshift command center where Flynn runs his secret operations. The move to his office hints at the deeper stakes of their mission, setting up the moment when Flynn’s life is about to shift from playing games to being inside one.
Fun fact: Jeff Bridges can also be seen in Culver City in The Big Lebowski.
Below is a clip from YouTube with the entire clip at Flynn’s Arcade.
Flynn’s Arcade can also be seen in 2010’s sequel, Tron Legacy. The exterior of 9543 Culver Blvd. appears to have been recreated digitally. Below you can see the Hull Building looking down Culver Blvd. Luckily, the real downtown Culver City looks a lot less dystopian!
The interiors look a lot like the actual location, but it is difficult to tell if it is a set or if they filmed onsite.
