The Postman Always Rings Twice is a classic film noir directed by Tay Garnett, based on James M. Cain’s novel of the same name. The story follows drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield), who arrives at a roadside diner and quickly becomes entangled in a passionate, dangerous affair with Cora Smith (Lana Turner), the wife of the diner’s older owner, Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway). Together, Frank and Cora plot to kill her husband and take over the diner, but their plan spirals out of control, leading to betrayal, suspicion, and inevitable tragedy.
After an attempted murder of Nick, he is taken to Blair General Hospital. The exterior of the hospital is actually the Irving Thalberg Building at Sony Studios. The exterior can be seen from the street off of Culver Blvd. The Thalberg Building was the headquarters of MGM Studios and now Sony Studios. I had a chance to have a meeting here. The twelve Best Picture Academy Awards are on display in the lobby. I also understand that the office with the large patio in the front of the building is reserved for the head of the studio.
Below you can see Lana Turner as Cora exiting the Thalberg building to meet John Garfield as Frank. Fun Fact: The Thalberg Building also served as the exterior of the police station in Naked Gun 33 1/3.
